Gujarat University Violence: Vice-Chancellor Questions Blaming Namaz for Attack on Foreign Students
Over the weekend, individuals stormed into the Gujarat University hostel in Ahmedabad and assaulted international students who were praying inside the premises.
Gujarat University’s vice-chancellor, Neerja Gupta, stated that the provocation for the violence against foreign students on Saturday night couldn’t have been solely due to their prayers. Gupta informed The Indian Express that lack of awareness about the local culture by foreign students may have contributed to the incident. She asserted that foreign students consuming non-vegetarian food and the disposal of leftovers could potentially be problematic in Gujarat’s predominantly vegetarian society.
The vice-chancellor emphasized the importance of educating and guiding foreign students about local culture and customs.
What is the dispute concerning international students at Gujarat University?
Over the weekend, a crowd reportedly entered the Gujarat University hostel in Ahmedabad and assaulted foreign students who were praying inside the premises. The altercation resulted in injuries to five individuals. Following the attack, a student from Sri Lanka and another from Tajikistan were admitted to the hospital for treatment.
A video circulating on social media purportedly depicts an altercation, where a student is seen striking an individual who is expressing dissatisfaction about namaz being conducted within the university campus.
In the meantime, Gujarat Police have detained multiple individuals for their suspected involvement in the assault. According to officials in Ahmedabad, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against around 25 unidentified individuals on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, causing harm voluntarily, property damage, and trespassing.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various sources. Opposition parties have censured the governing BJP administration for the state’s law and order situation.
The Ministry of External Affairs has also acknowledged the incident. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, stated in a tweet on X (previously known as Twitter) that the Gujarat government is taking stringent measures against those responsible.
“There was an incident of violence at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad yesterday. The state government is undertaking firm action against those responsible,” he stated.
