UN Report Warns of ‘Unprecedented’ Crisis: Famine Imminent in North Gaza
Aid agencies have reported challenges in accessing the northern region of Gaza to deliver essential supplies like food due to the dire situation there.
According to a food security assessment backed by the UN, half of the population in Gaza is facing “catastrophic” hunger, and urgent intervention is needed to prevent famine in the territory’s northern region by May.
Beth Bechdol, the deputy director-general of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), emphasized that having half of an entire population experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger, approaching famine, is unprecedented.
It amounts to around 1.1 million people experiencing “catastrophic food insecurity” due to the Israel-Hamas war, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) partnership said in its report.
The IPC hunger monitoring system, conducted by the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, assesses hunger severity on a scale of one to five. It is utilized by the UN and governments to determine whether a famine declaration is necessary.
