Kerala Conducts Voting for Russian Presidential Elections
The presidential elections in Russia commenced today, with citizens casting their votes until Sunday across the country’s 11 time zones.
Residents of Kerala who are citizens of Russia participated in the Russian presidential elections by casting their votes at a designated polling station set up at the Honorary Consulate of the Russian Federation, known as the Russian House, located in Thiruvananthapuram.
Ratheesh Nair, who serves as the Honorary Consul of Russia and Director of the Russian House in Thiruvananthapuram, mentioned that they organized voting for the Russian presidential elections for the third consecutive time. He extended appreciation to the Russian citizens residing in Kerala for their cooperation during the voting procedure.
During an interview with ANI, Nair remarked, “The Consulate of the Russian Federation is organizing polling for the Russian presidential elections for the third consecutive time. This opportunity is open not only to Russian nationals residing here but also to tourists. We are pleased to collaborate with the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation. I am immensely thankful to the Russian citizens in Kerala for their cooperation and eagerness to participate in the voting process for electing their new president.”
Sergey Azurov, the Senior Consul General in Chennai, stated, “We are conducting preliminary voting as part of the presidential elections. Our objective is to offer Russian Federation citizens residing in India the opportunity to participate.”
Ulia, a Russian citizen, expressed gratitude on behalf of her fellow countrymen in Kerala towards the Russian House and Consulate General in India for enabling them to participate in the Presidential polls by casting their votes.
In an interview with ANI, Ulia mentioned, “All those present today are either Russian citizens who permanently reside in India or are visiting tourists. Everyone is appreciative and pleased to be here to take part in the election, which holds significant importance for every citizen. It is our duty. Therefore, we extend our gratitude to the Russian House and the Consulate General in Chennai, India, for facilitating this opportunity.”
Russia is poised to conduct presidential elections spanning from March 15 to 17. Russian citizens will cast their votes from Friday through Sunday across the country’s 11 time zones. CNN reported that Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has authorized only three candidates to challenge Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The three contenders opposing Putin include Leonid Slutsky from the Liberal Democratic Party, Vladislav Davankov from the New People Party, and Nikolay Kharitonov from the Communist Party. It is believed that all three individuals maintain a favorable stance towards the Kremlin, and none oppose Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
With the majority of opposition candidates either deceased, incarcerated, exiled, disqualified from running, or merely symbolic figures, CNN reports that a triumph for Putin appears virtually certain.
Putin’s potential reelection would prolong his tenure until at least 2030. As a result of constitutional amendments in 2020, he could subsequently seek reelection and potentially remain in office until 2036.
