PM Modi-Led Panel Selects Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as Election Commissioners
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury mentioned that he had requested a concise list before the meeting, which would have provided him with information about all the candidates under consideration. He noted that the Government had forwarded the names of 212 officers on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the high-level committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi selected retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as the Election Commissioners.
Nevertheless, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior Congress leader and the Opposition representative on the panel, expressed his disagreement, raising concerns about the procedure followed. He asserted that the list of shortlisted officers was not provided to him beforehand. Chowdhury stated that he had requested a summary before the meeting, which would have included information about all the candidates under consideration. He mentioned that the Government had forwarded the names of 212 officers on Wednesday.
Sources said the Government had sent Chowdhury five lists containing 236 names.
The comprehensive list comprised 92 names of officers who had retired as Secretaries or held equivalent positions in the Government of India, along with 93 names of officers currently serving in similar capacities. Additionally, it included 15 officers who had retired as Chief Secretaries of states and union territories within the past year, as well as 28 officers currently serving as Chief Secretaries in various states and union territories.
