Reliance-backed AI model Hanooman, supported by Mukesh Ambani, is set to launch in March
Hanooman, a model developed by Reliance, is being created in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology universities and is supported by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd.
Backed by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd, the BharatGPT group is gearing up to introduce its inaugural ChatGPT-style service next month. The consortium, comprising Reliance and eight affiliated universities, provided a preview of the model. This preview demonstrated various interactions: a motorcycle mechanic in India conversed with an AI bot in Tamil, a banker communicated with the tool in Hindi, and a developer utilized it to write computer code.

Named Hanooman, the model symbolizes India’s pursuit of developing potentially revolutionary AI technology. Operating across 11 local languages, Hanooman will focus on four key sectors: healthcare, governance, financial services, and education.
How is Hanooman being developed?
In partnership with Indian Institute of Technology universities, the model is under development and enjoys support from Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Additionally, startups like Sarvam and Krutrim, funded by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Vinod Khosla’s fund respectively, are also constructing open-sourced AI models tailored for India.
What will Hanooman offer to users?
Hanooman aims to provide users with speech-to-text functionality, enhancing user-friendliness. Additionally, Reliance Jio plans to develop customized models tailored for specific applications. Reliance is currently engaged in developing Jio Brain, a platform designed to utilize AI across its extensive network of approximately 450 million subscribers.
