Data indicates that Namo Bharat’s daily ridership averaged approximately 3000 during the initial three months
PM Modi inaugurated Namo Bharat on October 20, 2023, and it was made accessible to the public the following day. The data provided covers daily ridership up to January 23, 2024.
According to a report in the Indian Express, since its public inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 21 last year, the Namo Bharat rapid trains, which were flagged off on October 20, have maintained an average daily ridership of approximately 3000.
The information, acquired through the Right To Information (RTI) Act, pertains to the initial 95 days of Namo Bharat, up to January 23, 2024.
According to the data, in October 2023, the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) was utilized by 63,852 passengers, followed by 71,124 passengers in November of the same year. In December 2023, the service saw an increase with 72,335 commuters, and during the initial 23 days of January 2024, the RRTS accommodated 72,382 travelers.
Consequently, this indicates that Namo Bharat trains accommodated a total of 279,423 passengers over the 95-day duration, averaging 2941 commuters per day.
At present, the RRTS operates on a priority section spanning 17 kilometers, encompassing five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot. According to an official from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), an extended segment covering 25 kilometers up to Meerut South will soon be operational.
“The majority of passengers presently travel between Sahibabad and Duhai, or vice versa. The true ridership scenario will become more evident once the next phase of the corridor becomes operational,” stated the official.
“The extension of the line to Meerut South is scheduled to be inaugurated by March. Discussions are underway with UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) regarding last-mile connectivity,” the official further stated.
‘8 lakh daily footfall’
According to a feasibility report by NCRTC, the RRTS corridor will span 82 kilometers, connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut. Upon the full inauguration of this entire stretch, daily commuter traffic is projected to increase to 8 lakh.
