Arvind Kejriwal Skips 6th ED Summons in Delhi Excise Policy Case; AAP Offers Explanation
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, will not be presenting himself before the Enforcement Directorate. AAP has stated that the ED summons are deemed “unlawful.”
On Monday, the Aam Aadmi Party announced that its national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, will not honor the sixth summons from the Enforcement Directorate, asserting that the agency’s summonses are “unlawful.” The AAP urged the ED to await the court’s decision instead of persistently issuing summonses to Arvind Kejriwal. This marks the sixth time that Arvind Kejriwal will abstain from attending ED summons in connection with the money laundering investigation linked to irregularities in the Delhi excise policy for 2021-22.
Following Arvind Kejriwal’s repeated absences from multiple summonses, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought intervention from a city court. On Saturday, the court granted Arvind Kejriwal an exemption from appearing in person for the day regarding the complaint lodged by the central agency.
Arvind Kejriwal’s legal representative filed an application indicating that the Budget Session of the Delhi assembly began on February 15 and is scheduled to extend until the first week of March.
It was stated that the Delhi Chief Minister expressed his intention to personally attend the court proceedings on the upcoming hearing date of March 16.
Arvind Kejriwal failed to attend the Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the fifth consecutive time on February 2. The summons to the Delhi Chief Minister came after he had also skipped the fourth summons on January 18.
During his absence from the fifth summons, the party deemed it “illegal.”
As per the ED, the agency aimed to document Kejriwal’s statement regarding aspects of the case, such as policy formulation, pre-finalization meetings, and bribery allegations.
The ED, in its sixth charge sheet submitted on December 2, 2023, identified AAP leader Sanjay Singh and his associate Sarvesh Mishra. Allegedly, the ED asserted that the AAP utilized kickbacks totaling ₹45 crore, which were allegedly generated through the policy, as part of its assembly elections campaign in Goa in 2022.
