BKU (U) plans to stage protests outside the residences of BJP leaders amid the ongoing farmers’ agitation
Amid the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Punjab-Haryana border, the demonstrators persist with their ‘Dilli Chalo’ movement, marking the fifth day of agitation on Saturday. Scheduled for Sunday, Union ministers Arjun Munda, Nityanand Rai, and Piyush Goyal are set to engage in the fourth round of discussions with farmer leaders. The previous three rounds of talks, held on February 8, 12, and 15, all ended without reaching a resolution.
The protesters have outlined a set of 13 demands, with the main focus placed on securing a legal assurance for minimum support price (MSP). While the government claims to have agreed upon 10 of these demands, the issue of MSP remains the primary source of contention between the two parties. Despite the farmers’ intentions to hold demonstrations in the national capital, their efforts have been thwarted by the Haryana Police, leading to their blockade at the Punjab-Haryana borders.
Over 200 farmer organizations are engaged in the protest; notably absent are the groups and unions that spearheaded the protests against the three central farm laws in 2020-21. Nevertheless, these groups suggest that they might join the agitation should the government persist in “suppressing” those who seek to march towards Delhi.
