Despite their divorce years ago, Kiran Rao is still labeled as ‘Aamir Khan’s wife’
Even after years of being divorced, filmmaker Kiran Rao still encounters people who inquire if she is ‘Aamir Khan’s wife’, prompting her to reflect on her feelings about the matter.
Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan, who married in 2005, went their separate ways in August 2021. During a recent interview with Zoom, Kiran, who has been occupied with promoting her upcoming film Laapataa Ladies, discussed the need to clarify her identity when others refer to her as ‘Aamir Khan’s wife’. She remarked that many perceive her solely as a spouse or former spouse, emphasizing that without a steadfast sense of self, she would have felt disheartened by being confined to such a role.
‘People might not even know my name’
Kiran Rao, who began her career as an assistant director on Aamir Khan’s 2001 film Lagaan, shared, “Even now, when I’m at the airport, I’m frequently asked, ‘You’re Aamir Khan’s wife, right?’ They may not even know my name, but the connection is immediately drawn to Aamir, and I’ve grown accustomed to that. Although now I have to respond, ‘Ex-wife.’ Honestly, it doesn’t bother me because personally, I’ve always pursued my own interests, maintained my own circle of friends, and cultivated my own life, which I actively pursued. I believe it’s crucial for anyone in a marriage to have their own space and identity.”
Kiran Rao on ‘being reduced to just a wife’
Kiran Rao, who has a son named Azad Rao Khan with Aamir, remarked, “Collaborating with Aamir in Aamir Khan Productions (for Laapataa Ladies) has always been seamless because he values opinions and regards me as a creative collaborator. It’s reassuring because despite the common perception of me as a wife or ex-wife, maintaining a strong sense of self prevents me from feeling disheartened by being solely defined by marital status. I find it rather amusing, to be honest.”
Kiran Rao defends Aamir Khan
Kiran Rao made headlines when she responded to director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s remarks about Aamir Khan’s films. She commended Aamir for taking responsibility and apologizing for any problematic aspects in his work. Additionally, she suggested that Sandeep should address any concerns directly with Aamir, rather than involving her in the discussion.
During her conversation with The Quint, Kiran also mentioned that she refrained from specifically mentioning Sandeep’s films, opting instead to discuss the broader issue of misogyny prevalent in Hindi cinema.
