Sagarika Ghose named TMC Rajya Sabha candidate, cites Mamata’s bravery
On Sunday, the TMC announced the nomination of journalist Sagarikha Ghose as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for February 27.
On Sunday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) put forward journalist Sagarikha Ghose as their candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections set for February 27. Ghose expressed her joy at the announcement, stating that she draws inspiration from the “remarkable courage” of TMC leader and Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee.
“I am thrilled and deeply honored to receive the nomination to the Rajya Sabha from @AITCofficial. I continue to draw inspiration from the incredible bravery of @MamataOfficial, the sole female Chief Minister in India. My dedication to upholding constitutional democratic principles remains steadfast,” Ghose conveyed on X, previously referred to as Twitter.
A senior journalist, columnist, and author, Ghose pursued her undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi before being awarded a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University, where she obtained her postgraduate degree in Modern History. Commencing her journalistic career in 1991, the TMC candidate for Rajya Sabha has made significant contributions to renowned publications including The Times of India, Outlook, and The Indian Express.
Throughout her career, Ghose has been honored with numerous journalism awards, such as the C. H. Mohammad Koya National Journalism Award and the Best Anchor Award presented by the Indian Television Academy. She is the offspring of Bhaskar Ghose, the former Director General of Doordarshan. Ghose is wedded to Rajdeep Sardesai, a journalist and news anchor.
TMC Rajya Sabha polls nominations
In addition to Ghose, the TMC has put forward three other candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections: Sushmita Dev, former president of the Congress’ women’s wing and former Lok Sabha member; Mamata Bala Thakur, a leader of the Dalit Matua community and former Lok Sabha member; and Nadimul Haque, who is currently serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Scheduled for February 27, the election will determine the allocation of 56 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states. West Bengal, comprising 16 Rajya Sabha seats, currently has 14 under the control of the TMC. Among these, the terms of five Rajya Sabha members – Nadimul Haque, Subhashis Chakraborty, Abir Biswas, Dr. Santanu Sen, and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi – are set to conclude in April.
