2024 Pakistan Election: PTI, PPP each win 5 seats; PML-N secures 4
As the polling for Pakistan’s general elections concluded on Thursday, former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif secured the NA-123 seat from Lahore, according to live updates on the election results in 2024.
Live updates on the Pakistan Election Result 2024 reveal significant delays in the vote count following Thursday’s national election. The Election Commission of Pakistan issued a late-night warning to polling officers, urging them to promptly release results, even as much as ten hours after polls had closed. Pakistan’s political arena is largely influenced by three major parties: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Results began to be announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan over nine hours after the conclusion of voting.
The National Assembly consists of 336 seats, with 266 candidates elected through direct voting and the remaining 70 seats reserved. Within these reserved seats, 60 are specifically designated for women and 10 for non-Muslims, distributed according to each party’s representation in the Assembly. To attain a simple majority, a minimum of 133 seats is required. However, numerous analysts speculate that the election results may not produce a clear winner.
Key highlights so far:
In the early stages, Shehbaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and a member of the PML-N party led by his brother Nawaz Sharif, clinched victory in the NA-123 seat from Lahore, adding to the party’s tally of four seats as of 9 am.
Nevertheless, despite PML-N’s performance, independent candidates backed by the incarcerated PTI party led by Imran Khan secured victory in five parliamentary seats, exceeding the success of PML-N.
As of 9 am, the PPP, under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, secured just three seats, trailing behind both PML-N and PTI.
Zafar Iqbal, the special secretary at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), attributed the delay in result announcements to an “internet issue.” This led to the first official results for a constituency being announced more than ten hours after the polling booths closed.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Imran Khan, urged people to eliminate passwords from their personal WiFi networks through a social media post, with the intention of making internet access easier for nearby individuals.
As the counting process persists into the night, a more defined electoral panorama is anticipated to emerge by early Friday.
