Today, Champai Soren to undergo floor test; BJP claims Jharkhand’s loss
The Champai Soren government is set to undergo a critical trust vote in the state assembly today at 11 am.
Today at 11 am, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren will demonstrate his majority in the assembly through a floor test. Soren took over the top position following the resignation of his superior, Hemant Soren, who was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last week. The ruling JMM-led alliance, which had kept its MLAs secluded in a resort in Hyderabad to prevent defection, returned its leaders to Ranchi on Sunday evening. The BJP argued that this action by the coalition indicated a lack of confidence.
Here are the latest updates:
- Amid accusations of intentional delay by the governor, Champai Soren established a government, asserting the backing of 43 MLAs out of the 81 in the Jharkhand assembly. The NDA, led by the BJP, commands 29 MLAs, comprising 26 from the BJP itself and three from AJSU.
- Following the arrest of Hemant Soren on January 31st by the ED in an alleged land scam, his close associate, Champai Soren, approached the governor, asserting support from 43 MLAs. However, although some MLAs didn’t formally endorse the letter of support, they remain aligned with the coalition.
- Reports suggest that certain JMM MLAs who haven’t supported Champai Soren may abstain from the floor test.
- Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is slated to leave jail on Monday to participate in the floor test voting process, following permission granted by a special court in Ranchi on Saturday.
- Upon their return to Ranchi, MLAs from the JMM-led alliance expressed confidence in winning the trust vote, claiming support from 48 to 50 legislators. JMM lawmaker Mithilesh Thakur asserted that some BJP MLAs also back the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the state.
- Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo remarked that regardless of the outcome of the floor test, it’s a loss for Jharkhand. He criticized the state’s humiliation in front of the national and international community, highlighting the 40-hour period when the chief minister was untraceable.
- BJP’s chief whip, Biranchi Narain, predicted the JMM-led coalition’s defeat in the confidence vote, attributing their actions in Hyderabad to a lack of confidence.
- Amid fears of BJP attempting to lure MLAs ahead of the trust vote, MLAs from the JMM-led alliance, who were stationed at a Hyderabad resort for the past three days, were airlifted in two flights.
- One JMM MLA, Lobin Hembrom, voiced criticism regarding the lavish resort stay in Hyderabad. However, JMM leadership clarified that Hembrom would support the coalition government in the voting process.
