Gunshots were directed at the home of an individual associated with the pro-Khalistan personality Hardeep Singh Nijjar, following Nijjar’s death in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.
The proprietor of the targeted residence was identified by Canadian media as Simranjeet Singh. The incident transpired during the early hours of Thursday, with eyewitnesses reporting that both a vehicle parked at the residence and the dwelling itself were struck by numerous bullets.
The Surrey detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) verified the occurrence of a “shots fired incident at a residence in South Surrey.”
According to a statement issued on Thursday, Surrey RCMP stated that on February 1st, at approximately 1:21 am, they received a notification regarding gunfire at a residence. Frontline officers promptly responded, discovering evidence consistent with a shooting at the scene.
No injuries were reported.
The investigation into the incident is being handled by Surrey RCMP’s Major Crime Section. Investigators “consider this to be an isolated occurrence,” the statement noted, and officers are actively working to ascertain the motive behind the incident.
Nevertheless, pro-Khalistan organizations have promptly blamed India for orchestrating the attack, citing Singh’s involvement in coordinating a demonstration outside the Indian Consulate in Vancouver on January 26.
Moninder Singh, spokesperson for the British Columbia Gurdwaras Council and a notable separatist figure in Canada, conveyed to CBC News that Simranjeet Singh perceives the incident as an effort by the Indian state or its agents to intimidate him and deter him from his activism efforts. Singh also suggested that Simranjeet Singh’s association with Hardeep Singh Nijjar may have influenced the attack.
Nevertheless, Surrey and its neighboring towns have experienced a notable increase in gang-related violence, including incidents such as drive-by shootings, in recent months. This surge includes an instance where shots were fired at the home of the son of Lakshmi Narayan Mandir’s president, Satish Kumar, on December 27.
