Sources suggest Hemant Soren’s wife could become Chief Minister if he’s arrested
Today, Hemant Soren is scheduled for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate regarding an alleged money laundering case.
Sources within his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Party claim that if Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is arrested, his wife Kalpana Soren could assume his position. Mr. Soren is scheduled to be interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate today regarding an alleged money laundering case. There is a possibility of his arrest by the agency following the recording of his statement.
According to sources, Mr. Soren conveyed this decision during a gathering of ruling alliance MLAs this evening. The MLAs concurred, recognizing the paramount importance of maintaining the government’s stability.
Banna Gupta, the state’s health minister representing the Congress party, informed reporters on Tuesday, “All the MLAs from the alliance, including those from the Congress, are firmly backing the Chief Minister.”
However, there could be a legal obstacle to Mrs. Soren assuming the position.
Constitutional regulations stipulate that if the Assembly’s term is less than a year from expiration, by-elections cannot be conducted. Consequently, Kalpana Soren’s eligibility to become an MLA could be challenging.
The Jharkhand Assembly election is slated for November this year.
Sources indicated that if necessary, legal advice would be sought regarding this issue, or an alternative individual might assume the top position.
The Enforcement Directorate has alleged that the ₹600-crore land scam entails a significant operation to alter the ownership of government land, subsequently selling it to developers.
Thus far, the agency has apprehended 14 individuals in connection with the case, including Chhavi Ranjan, a 2011-batch IAS officer who previously held positions as director of the state Social Welfare Department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
Mr. Soren asserted that he is the victim of an extensive conspiracy.
