‘Reflect’: Prime Minister Modi’s directive to disruptive MPs before the Budget session
“Those who engage in the ‘cheerharan’ of democracy within Parliament, opposing for the sake of opposition, are not remembered,” stated PM Modi.
As the Budget Session of Parliament commenced on Wednesday, just a day ahead of the interim Budget 2024, Prime Minister Modi, during his speech, conveyed a message to MPs behaving disruptively and emphasized the need for reflection. Reflecting on the recent passing of the women’s reservation bill in the new Parliament, PM Modi remarked, “We witnessed another demonstration of women empowerment on January 26. Today, President Droupadi Murmu will address the session, and tomorrow Nirmala Sitharaman ji will present the interim Budget. This marks a celebration of the power of women.”
During his speech, PM Modi also criticized MPs who were accused of disrupting parliamentary proceedings, stating, “Over the past decade, MPs have acted in their own interests within Parliament. However, it is important to note that those who are ‘habitual offenders’, those accustomed to undermining democracy, should reflect on their actions in the previous session. They might even consider consulting their constituents to see if they are remembered for such behavior.”
PM Modi emphasized that those who vocally opposed in Parliament with conviction, yet offered constructive insights instead of opposing merely for the sake of it, would be held in high regard. “This moment also calls for introspection. I encourage my fellow parliamentarians not to overlook the significance of this session,” PM Modi added.
“We will present the complete Budget post-election.”
PM Modi stated that it is customary to present an interim budget when elections are imminent. “Once we establish the government following the election, we will present the comprehensive budget,” PM Modi affirmed.
