Nitish Kumar criticizes PM Modi on Karpoori Thakur’s Bharat Ratna
On Tuesday, the Central government awarded Bharat Rat na posthumously to the Bihar icon.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar stated on Wednesday that while the JD(U) had long demanded Bharat Ratna for late CM Karpoori Thakur, PM Narendra Modi would likely seek to claim full credit for it. Kumar made these remarks during a party event commemorating Karpoori Thakur’s centenary birth celebration in Patna.
On Tuesday, the Central government awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously to the iconic figure from Bihar.
Nitish Kumar asserted that PM Modi communicated the award information to Rammath Thakur, the son of his party colleague and Thakur.
Ramnath Thakur, my party colleague and the late leader’s son, informed me that the prime minister called him after the announcement. I haven’t received a call from the PM yet. While he may seek full credit, I express gratitude to the PM and his government for addressing a demand I’ve advocated since assuming power in Bihar,” Kumar stated.
Nitish Kumar mentioned drawing inspiration from Thakur’s life, emphasizing that he refrained from involving any family members in politics.
“Karpoori Thakur also motivated our dedication to the welfare of Other Backward Classes and Extremely Backward Classes. The caste survey, conducted by us, along with various other initiatives for the marginalized sections, should be extended nationwide,” Kumar conveyed to the gathering.
On Wednesday, the Congress embraced the choice to bestow the highest civilian honor upon Karpoori Thakur. Nevertheless, it remarked that it mirrors Modi’s desperation and hypocrisy.
Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, stated, “Despite showcasing the Modi Government’s desperation and hypocrisy, the Indian National Congress appreciates the posthumous conferment of Bharat Ratna upon the champion of social justice, Jannayak Karpoori Thakurji.”
On Tuesday, Kumar expressed that the Modi government had met a longstanding demand of the JDU.
“I have persistently advocated for Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur. The announcement brings joy as it fulfills a longstanding JD(U) demand,” he remarked.
Thakur, the inaugural non-Congress socialist leader to hold the position of chief minister, passed away in 1988.
Affectionately known as ‘Jan Nayak’ (people’s leader), Thakur becomes the 49th recipient of the nation’s highest civilian award. The last recipient was the late president Pranab Mukherjee in 2019.
