PM Modi shares moving stories on Karpoori Thakur Jayanti
A day before his birth anniversary, Karpoori Thakur was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
On Karpoori Thakur’s 100th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sincere homage, recognizing his notable efforts in advancing social justice and steadfast dedication to public welfare during his two terms as Bihar chief minister.
On Tuesday, Karpoori Thakur received India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.
In a blog post, Prime Minister Modi pondered the lasting impact of Thakur, a leader who advocated for fair allocation of reservation benefits and introduced job quotas for other backward classes (OBCs) a decade ahead of any national efforts in that regard.
“Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji’s birth centenary is today, marking the impactful legacy of his unwavering commitment to social justice, positively influencing the lives of millions,” stated Prime Minister Modi.
He emphasized Thakur’s modest origins and his determination in overcoming numerous challenges to contribute to the improvement of society.
The prime minister shared stories depicting Karpoori Thakur’s simplicity, citing occasions when he used his personal funds for various matters, including his daughter’s wedding.
“As the Chief Minister of Bihar, he opted not to receive land or funds for a political leaders’ colony. In 1988, upon his demise, visiting leaders were moved to tears witnessing the humble state of his village house, questioning how such a remarkable figure could have such a modest home!” he penned.
PM Modi recounted a 1977 incident when, as the CM of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur attended an event in a torn kurta. Despite receiving funds to buy a new one, Thakur selflessly donated the money to the CM Relief Fund, demonstrating his altruistic character.
“Throughout his political journey, he tirelessly worked towards establishing a society with equitable resource distribution, ensuring that opportunities were accessible to everyone irrespective of their social status,” stated PM Modi, emphasizing Thakur’s dedication to tackling systemic inequalities.
“He was so dedicated to his principles that, even during an era dominated by the Congress Party, he adopted a clearly anti-Congress stance. He firmly believed, from an early stage, that the Congress had strayed from its original principles,” he further noted.
