It’s a challenging task to revive Pakistan’s economy,” stated former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
Nawaz’s comments coincide with significant political parties, such as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and PML-N, intensifying their election campaigns. Party leaders have assumed leadership roles in their respective campaigns, aiming to garner support from the 240 million-strong nation set to elect their representatives on February 8.
Speaking at a gathering in Mansehra, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, where the three-time prime minister is running for NA-15, Nawaz expressed that Pakistan has lagged behind globally and emphasized the need for the country to undergo a process of “rebuilding.”
Looking back at his prior term as the country’s top executive, Nawaz emphasized that during his government’s tenure, not only was the exchange rate of the dollar limited to 104 against the Pakistani rupee, but also, as reported by Geo TV, they had successfully “eradicated” load shedding from the financially strained nation.
Without explicitly mentioning names, Nawaz directed a new criticism toward Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its founder Imran Khan, PML-N’s primary adversary and vocal critic. He expressed regret that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had been deceived and voted for this “untruthful” individual.
Reflecting on the 2013 elections, Nawaz mentioned that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had proposed a coalition government in KP. However, he opted not to proceed with it, choosing instead to respect PTI’s entitlement to form the government based on their numerical strength.
Addressing the people of KP, the PML-N leader remarked, “I question what [PTI] accomplished during their decade-long governance,” taking a dig at the party that held power in the province from 2013 until January 2023.
“These people have ruined this province,” he added.
Pledging to tackle widespread inflation, Nawaz affirmed that, if elected, his administration would prioritize job creation and work towards securing an airport for Mansehra.
He further mentioned the establishment of universities and colleges in the region.
Sharif, a three-time former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who returned from self-imposed exile in London in October last year to lead his PML-N party in the upcoming general elections, is aspiring for a fourth term in the February 8 polls.
