Lakhimpur Compensation Policy While Cong Writes Larger Checks, Excludes Relatives Of BJP Workers, Driver.
The UP government handed out checks for 45 rupees each to the families of the eight who died, while the congressional compensation amounts to 1 million rupees each, just for the families of four farmers and one journalist killed in the incident.
Who should receive compensation? This question has become another political focus in the violent episode of Lakhimpur Kheri.
The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has said it is compensating the families of the eight people killed in the incident, while the opposition Congress has decided to compensate only five of the families.
The UP government has issued checks for 45 lakh rupees each to the families of four farmers, who were allegedly run over by an SUV belonging to the son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, Ashish Mishra, and the family of journalist Raman Kashyap .
The family of BJP worker Shyam Sundar also received a check for Rs 45 lakh on Wednesday and the same amount was given to the families of BJP worker Shubham Mishra and driver Hari Om Mishra. A job has also been promised to the closest relatives to the families of all the deceased. “It is a regrettable incident. We have paid compensation to the eight families, “said a senior UP government official.
But Congress has decided to compensate only five of the eight people: the four farmers and the journalist. “The other three (two BJP workers and the driver of the vehicle Thar) are involved in the brutal massacre of farmers. How can they be compensated? They are the accused, ”a congressional leader in Uttar Pradesh told News Agencies.
The BJP, however, says that all three were lynched to death and noted that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi decided not to visit these three families during their visit to Lakhimpur.
Priyanka Gandhi, however, said Thursday that she said she also wanted to meet the families of the deceased BJP workers, but police told her those families did not want to meet her. “So I told them to convey my condolences,” she said.
Congress has tried to outdo the UP government by compensating the bereaved families of the four farmers and the journalist. The state governments of Punjab and Chhattisgarh, led by Congress, will give 50 lakhs each, bringing the total compensation for each family to 1 crore rupees.
The head of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, has said that the UP government should give compensation of 2 million rupees to farmers’ families. Akhilesh Yadav and BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra are expected to announce final compensation for the five families during their visit to Lakhimpur on Thursday. Like Congress, the SP is also expected to ignore the case of the two BJP workers and the car driver allegedly shown in viral videos in which farmers protesting against new agricultural marketing reforms are killed.
