Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old Muslim man, whose beheaded body was found on a railroad track in the Belagavi district last week, officials familiar with the events said on Sunday.
So far, at least three people have been registered for murder.
Officials from the Belagavi rural police station said the case, which was originally registered with the railway police, was transferred to the district police on Sunday.
“We are currently questioning some suspects in the case and arrests will be made soon,” a senior official said on condition of anonymity.
The headless body of Arbaz Mullah was found on the train tracks in Khanapur, in the border district, about 505 kilometers from Bangalore, on September 28.
While the police had initially registered a case of unnatural death, they later presented a murder case after the autopsy. report revealed head injuries.
In her complaint to the police, the mother of the deceased, Nazeema Sheikh, alleged that her son, who was a car salesman, was killed by the family and relatives of a Hindu woman with whom he had a relationship.
Sheikh claimed that the two families were aware of the relationship and also alleged the role of two members of a Hindu right-wing group in the murder.
“We knew about the relationship and I had talked to the woman’s mother to make sure she didn’t know him. I also told my son not to know her. I moved from Khanapur to Azam Nagar in Belagavi with my son. But the two continued to meet and we began to receive threats from his family and relatives, ”Sheikh said. A relative of the deceased alleged that the woman’s family targeted members of Sri Ram Sene who reportedly threatened the man on 26 September.
“They called him to Khanapur, where he took the phone from him and deleted the photos of the woman. He also demanded money to reach an agreement.
Then he sold his (Volkswagen) Polo car for ₹ 90,000 to pay them, ”said the relative, seeking anonymity.
The relative added that members of the group also threatened to pour acid in their faces if Mullah did not pay them the money.
Sheikh said he was out of town on September 26 when Mullah informed him of the threats and subsequently disappeared. She learned of her murder after a railroad guard called her from her son’s number.
On the basis of her complaint, the police arrested three people, including the girl’s father, for murder (Article 302 of the Indian Penal Code).
When asked why the named suspects had not been detained, the Belagavi rural police said the procedure to transfer the case and other “technical” matters are ongoing. “As we said, we are questioning some suspects and will soon arrest the culprits,” said a senior police officer.
