Facebook outage: Millions of new users joined the communications app on Monday, Signal said on Twitter.
Signal, the private messaging app endorsed by Edward Snowden, saw user subscriptions skyrocket during the extended downtime of Facebook Inc.’s network of apps and services.
Millions of new users joined the communications app on Monday, Signal said on Twitter. Facebook suffered a six-hour outage that spanned its messenger WhatsApp, the leading social network and photo-sharing app Instagram, shutting out many of its 2.7 billion global users.
The situation detained some of the company’s employees and prompted a public apology from the chief technology officer.
The loss of Facebook turned into a gain for other social networks. The Twitter Inc. network stayed online, with CEO Jack Dorsey tweeting his endorsement of Signal as a suitable WhatsApp alternative and amplifying Snowdens urging his followers to stay away from the Facebook-owned app.
Thousands of rooms on the Clubhouse audio chat app had people talking about the outage, a spokeswoman for the service said, adding that all of its top metrics rose.
The signals focus on privacy, expressed in its policy of not collecting any data about its users and thus avoiding situations in which governments can pressure it to reveal personally identifiable information, has made it a favorite for secure communications.
Telegram, another WhatsApp alternative, has also historically added millions of users in the wake of major WhatsApp outages.
