The violence erupted when a group of farmers protesting in Kheri’s Tikonia area tried to prevent the visit of Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra and Senior Deputy Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. The protesters were upset by a recent speech by Mr. Mishra.
Farmers claimed violence erupted after protesters were run over by a car in the convoy of ministers. Images from the area showed arson and burning vehicles. Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the incident.
A retired High Court judge will now investigate the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, the Uttar Pradesh government announced. The state government has also announced that it will pay compensation of Rs 45 lakh to the families of those killed in the violence.

If my son had been there, he would not have come out alive,” said Mishra, the interior minister, quoted by the news agency. “My son was present at the event site (of the senior vice ministers) … the whole time I was accompanying the senior vice minister,” he said.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a group representing protesting agricultural unions, identified the dead as Lovepreet Singh, 24, Nachattar Singh, 60, Daljeet Singh, 32, and Gurwinder Singh, 20. Others who were injured in the violence They are: Hariom from Parsehra Fardhan Kheri Police Station, Shyam Sundar from Singhhakala Singhahi District of Kheri, Resident Shubham Mishra from Shivpuri Lakhimpur District of Kher and Aman Kashyap from Nighasan District of Kheri.
Opposition leaders from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to Akhilesh Yadav have been prevented from visiting the area. The Uttar Pradesh government has asked the Lucknow airport authority not to allow the arrival of Chhattisgarh Prime Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Punjabs Deputy Minister CM Sukhjinder S Randhawa. The BSP, which was denied visitation rights, took it easy and decided to wait.
Mobile internet services have been suspended in parts of the district hit by violence, where restrictions have also been imposed under section 144 of the CrPC, which prohibits the gathering of four or more people, according to officials.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called for calm, said he was “saddened” by the violence in his state and promised strict action against those responsible.
