See: Cristiano Ronaldo Scores Dramatic Last-Breath Winner For Manchester United In Champions League Clash Vs Villarreal.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in injury time when Manchester United defeated Villarreal 2-1 in a Champions League clash.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a spectacular goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Manchester United beat Villarreal 2-1 in a Champions League group stage match at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Playing against the team that beat them in a penalty shootout in the final of the Europa League in recent seasons, United fell behind with a goal from Paco Alcácer in the 53rd minute. However, they tied the score seven minutes later when left back Alex Telles scored with an exquisite volley.
The game appeared to be heading for a draw when Ronaldos’ late intervention gave United all three points.
Receiving a cross from the left wing, Ronaldo headed the ball for his teammate Jesse Lingard, who dropped it.
Despite having a sharp angle to shoot, Ronaldos’ shot came in after a touch from the Villarreal goalkeeper.
The victory gave a huge boost to United, who had lost their first group stage match at the Young Boys earlier this month.
With three defeats in four games leading up to the Villarreal game, United had a responsibility to recover.
And it was Ronaldo who delivered the merchandise to the Red Devils on Wednesday.
“That’s what happens at Old Trafford, we had to throw caution to the wind and we were lucky in the end,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the game.
“When you have Cristiano on the pitch there is always a possibility,” he added. With the victory, United have three points from two games, equaling Swiss champion Young Boys.
