The Ministry Of Defense Places An Order For 118 Tanks.
The Defense Ministry on Thursday sealed a contract to acquire 118 Arjun Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) for the Indian Army at a cost of Rs 7,523 crore, in a major move to increase its combat capabilities.
The Defense Ministry placed the order for the Arjuna Mk-1A tanks from the Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai.
The MBT Mk-1A is a new Arjun Tank variant designed to improve firepower, mobility and survivability, infused with 72 new features and more indigenous content from the Mk-1 variant.

“The Ministry of Defense (MoD) placed an order with the Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai for the supply of 118 Arjun Mk-1A Main Battle Tanks (MBT) for the Indian Army on 23 September, “the ministry said in a statement.
“The order, worth Rs 7,523 crore, will provide additional impetus to the ‘Make in India’ initiative in the defense sector and is a major step towards achieving it, he said.
The ministry said the tanks would ensure effortless mobility on all terrains, as well as precise target engagement during the day and night. It has been designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) incorporating numerous upgrades to the Arjun MBT, the main battle tank in service with the Indian Army.
“The MK-1A is equipped with superior and precise firepower, off-road mobility and invincible multi-layer protection provided by a host of advanced technology systems. It can face the enemy during the day and night and in both static and dynamic modes, ”said the ministry.
He said the Heavy Vehicles Factory production order will open a major avenue in defense manufacturing for more than 200 Indian suppliers, including MSMEs, with job opportunities for around 8,000 people.
“This will be a flagship project that will showcase indigenous capabilities in cutting-edge defense technologies,” the ministry said.
