Some student groups on Wednesday staged separate protests against the higher education department here to increase undergraduate vacancies at all constituent universities of Cluster University Of Jammu.
The protesters, including activists from the National Student Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), took to the streets in different locations and then peacefully dispersed.
A group of protesting students left the Government College for Women at Gandhi Nagar in the city and tried to block the main road in support of their demand to increase admission capacity and improve infrastructure in all constituent colleges, said the authorities.
However, they said the protesters were persuaded and driven back to the university premises by a strong group of policemen who rushed to maintain law and order.
“We are holding a protest to highlight the complaints of students who were denied admission to the general category by the pooled university despite having obtained more than 80-90 percent of grades in the previous class,” said one student protesting.
He said Cluster University should immediately increase admission seats as Jammu University did so that more students can enter.
Separately, NSUI-affiliated students gathered outside the press club here and burned a BJP effigy to protest Cluster University’s denial of admission to students.
“Cluster University Of Jammu is playing with the future of students who, despite scoring above 85 percent on the class 12 exam, are unable to enter universities,” said Sunny Parihar, who led the protest.
Students affiliated with the ABVP also took to the streets in different places and held peaceful protests in support of the aggrieved students and sought their admission.
The protesters threatened to intensify the unrest if the government did not improve the admission places in all the universities affiliated with the Cluster University.
