Solar Capacity Grows to 10,000MW in 3 Years
The solar power generation capacity of India has crossed 10,000MW, a jump of more than 3 times in less than 3 years as government pushes for renewable energy sources to meet galloping demand.
The milestone was achieved after the largest power producer of India, NTPC, commissioned a 45MW solar power project in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Piyush Goyal, New and Renewable Energy Minister tweeted, “Bright Future: India has crossed 10,000MW of solar power capacity today. More than 3 times increase in less than 3 years.”
As of May 26, 2014, the solar power generation capacity of India stood at 2,650MW.
Presently, 14,000MW or 14 gigawatt solar projects are under development and 6GW is to be auctioned soon.
Based on power ministry estimates, another 8.8GW capacity is likely to be added in 2017 which includes 1.1GW of rooftop solar installations.
The Indian government is aiming towards 100GW of solar and 60GW of wind energy capacity by 2022.Total renewable energy generation capacity is envisaged at 175GW by 2022.
