Decommissioning of INS Viraat, the Oldest Aircraft Carrier to Happen Today
The oldest aircraft carrier of the world, INS Viraat, will be decommissioned today after serving a glorious 30 years in the Indian Navy.
The retirement of INS Viraat will not only lead to the ending of a glorious chapter in the history of Indian Navy but, also expected to create a vacuum as sea hawks will face the shortage of two aircraft carriers. The decommissioning of INS Vikrant took place on 1997.
Manohar Parrikar, Defense Minister will attend the decommissioning ceremony along with other dignitaries.
The ceremony will also include the lowering and wrapping-up of the naval flag installed on the warship at sunset, marking the end of a long sea odyssey which lasted for 55 years.
The aircraft carrier was built in 1943 and was commissioned in the Indian Navy in 1987 and it served in the Royal British Navy for twenty seven years.
The decision on the future of INS Viraat has yet not been decided.
