CCEA Pushes Solar Power Development Initiative by Approving 40,000MW Solar Park Scheme
On Wednesday, a cabinet panel approved to increase the capacity of solar parks and projects to 40,000MW from 20,000MW which is expected to boost the solar power development initiative of the government.
Piyush Goyal, Power and Renewable Energy Minister stated in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) that the enhanced capacity would lead to setting up of a minimum fifty solar parks where each would have a capacity of 500MW or above in different part of India. He also added that, solar park scheme’s capacity has been increased following the demand for more solar parks from the states.
The solar parks along with ultra mega solar power projects will be established by 2019-20 with an investment of Rs 8,100 crore from the central government.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) stated that, when the solar capacity becomes operational it will generate 64 billion units of electricity every year which would in turn reduce 55 million tonnes of CO2 per year over its lifecycle.
The development of the solar parks will be done by collaborating with union territories and state governments as all are eligible for benefits under the scheme.
Goyal also said that a scheme launched in Dec’14 is already being implemented by MNRE to develop 25 solar parks with average capacity of 20,000MW.
