Air Quality of the Capital Getting Better, Shows Data
Though it may sound too good to be true but, in 2017 the air quality of Delhi has so far been better than 2016. The air quality index data was shared by the Central Pollution Control Board with Times of India which shows that average AQI for January this year was 304 compared to 369 of same period last year.
For February, AQI is 265 – in the ‘poor’ category compared to 337 – in the ‘very poor’ category last year’s same period.
The analysis of PM2.5 concentrations by Centre for Science and Environment from 6 stations in Delhi shows considerable decline from 284 micrograms per cubic meters in Jan’16 to 181 this year and 158 micrograms per cubic meters in Feb’16 to 146 this year.
CSE clean air campaign head, Anumita Roy Chowdhury stated that, after the smog of Diwali there was high peak in Nov’16. This led to actions being taken by agencies which included closing of the Badarpur power plant as well as implementing Supreme Court’s order of imposing environment compensation charge for trucks, she added. She also stated that, though other actions have also been taken and the situation may have improved a little bit but levels are still very poor and the momentum needs to be maintained.
