West Bengal Enters into a Joint Venture with GAIL
The government of West Bengal on Tuesday decided to enter into collaboration with Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) to provide natural gas to every household in greater Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal at the Cabinet Standing Committee’s meeting gave her approval on the collaboration, according to finance minister Amit Mitra.
Mitra also stated that, it was a long time since the government of West Bengal has been talking about city gas supply and finally the decision has been taken by the chief minister. GCGSC, a state owned company will have equity of 26% and GAIL will hold 74% stake in the Rs 3000 crore project, Mitra added.
Investment in the project will be carried out by GAIL whereas the state government would provide different assets like the infrastructure and land support, Mitra stated.
He also said that, gas would be supplied to the urban areas first and then, it would be supplied to the rest of the state which will include small towns as well. The pricing has yet not been decided.
In another development, as part of the beautification drive, the state government has taken the decision to pass on the innumerable electrical cables, wires and telephone lines hanging overhead via underground ducts.
