Security Review to Take Place across all Airports in the Nation
After the recent attacks on Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul and Zaventem International Airport in Brussels, India is all set to embark on a comprehensive airport security review. A committee including three high level members is presently studying the security deployment at all airports and expected to shortly submit a report.
Ministry of Home Affairs sources stated that, with the present system, it is next to impossible to hijack any aircraft using explosives or weapons. They also stated that, there are different levels of checks and new technology is being used to scan luggage so, explosives and weapons cannot be smuggled on-board.
An ambitious plan has been put in place by the security agencies to stop terrorists from getting near to the airport buildings. Sources with knowledge of the plan stated that, the plan is in progress however, the effort will be to put up additional security cordons on all entrances to the airport. They also stated that, with the present threat level, in some places like Delhi and Mumbai, the plan has already been put into place.
Additional cordons consist of setting up posts and barricades with CCTV cameras along with recorders to check all vehicles and another layer of security personnel to physically verify passengers before they reach the airport building. These arrangements would be made at a distance from the main building. As per the plan, suspicious people or vehicles can be taken to a different lane for further checking.
The security arrangement is expected to be made available for tier-II airports as well.
Though, body scanning is still an issue but, the CISF has started experimenting with body scanners acquired from Europe and the US on a trial basis.
