India Working Against the Growing Interests of Beijing in Sri Lanka
By interfering in a Beijing funded port project in Sri Lanka, India is working against Chinese interests as it is worried about losing influence in the Indian Ocean, stated state media on Tuesday.
Global Times, nationalistic tabloid stated that, Sri Lanka was made to “vow” that it will not allow China to indulge in military activities at Hambantota port.
Sri Lanka’s ambassador to China, Karunasena Kodituwakku told mediapersons that China will not be allowed to setup military facilities at any port in Sri Lanka. He also added that, Chinese investors have been informed that China will not be allowed to use civilian facilities militarily. He also stated that, Sri Lanka considers its neighbours concerns and it will not create any situation which may lead to suspicion. The Indian Ocean is an important part of the international trade, he added.
From the University of International Relations, Chu Yin said that, “Sri Lanka’s promise is unnecessary because the port is meant for civilian use. It shows that India is interfering in Sri Lanka’s affairs.” He also said that, “The BRI always focuses on civilian projects to help developing countries, and China respects these countries’ security concerns when pushing infrastructure development.”
Yin in addition to his statement said that, “China has no intention to offend India, and the programme is good for Sri Lanka’s economic development. However, if India has a problem with the programme and oppresses its neighbour, it only shows that it is interfering in the domestic affairs of other countries.”
