IT Companies Cutting Down Recruitment from B-Schools
The largest recruiters of candidates from B-school campuses, information technology companies, have cut down on hiring numbers this placement season following the protectionist stance taken by the recently elected US President, Donald Trump.
This season, recruitments by IT firms have dropped by twenty to forty percent in various tier-II and tier-I management schools. IT hiring fell by twenty six percent at MDI (Management Development Institute), Gurgaon. Similarly, IT hiring dropped by thirty percent at GLIM (Great Lakes Institute of Management), Chennai and by thirty to forty percent at Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research.
Infosys took only thirteen people from one business school as compared to forty people last year whereas Dell hired only 3 people against 5 and Wipro hired 5 compared to 9 last time. Savita Mohanty from XIMB (Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar) stated that they are expecting 30 percent drop in hiring numbers compared to last year. Based on ET Top Recruiters 2016 Survey, 6 out of top ten recruiters by numbers throughout twenty six B-schools belonged from the technology space which included names like Accenture, Infosys, TCS, IBM, Cognizant and Wipro. However this time, the situation has been completely different.
On a report dated 17th Jan’2017, ET stated that TCS and Infosys will recruit more engineers from US campuses as they prepare for strict visa norms under the Trump government.
Director of corporate and career services, Great Lakes, R Shreenath stated that there has been a thirty percent reduction in recruitment numbers this year as compared to previous years of recruitment from their campus. However, an Infosys spokesperson stated that recruitment from the US may not have significant impact on hiring numbers in India. Kanwal Kapil, MDI placements chairperson stated that consulting has remained quite stable but back-end roles have suffered a blow.
