Bull Taming Sport Legalised, Jallikattu Bill Passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly
After state wide protests over jallikattu, the TN assembly on Monday passed an amendment bill which legalised jallikattu without any hindrance. The amendment bill was unanimously adopted after members of all parties spoke for it welcoming the initiative.Piloted by O Paneerselvam, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017” was adopted by voice vote. It came into effect on the same day the ordinance was issued, Jan 21’ 2017.
According to the bill, Jallikattu has been defined as an event which involves bulls and conducted by following the culture and tradition from January to May. It also includes similar festivals like ‘vadamadu’, ‘manjuviratu’ and ‘eruduvidhum’. The bill also noted that the jallikattu was held as violative of the PCA Act by the Supreme Court.
Further, the bill stated that considering the role of jallikattu towards promoting and preserving the culture and tradition and also keeping in mind the continuance and survival of native bull breeds, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to exempt the event from the provisions of the PCA Act.
