India Occupies No. 1 Spot in Google Play App Usage, Ahead of the US
In the year 2016, the most number of downloads from the Google Play store came from users in India. App Annie, a global app analytics firm stated that India recorded six billion downloads surpassing the US in 2016. The third position was occupied by Brazil. India occupied the 3rd spot in the year 2015. China isn’t a part of the rankings as Google is banned in the country however it took up the no.1 position when it comes to iOS app store downloads.
The report also stated that India has progressed phenomenally over the last 2 years and in 2016, it has surpassed US as the 2nd largest smartphone market. Also it was stated that domestically produced smartphones are major reason behind India’s huge success. With the Indian economy poised for further growth, the penetration into the smartphone market will witness further growth in the years to come according to the report.
India was also ahead of others when it comes to time spent on apps. In 2016, a total of 900 billion hours was spent by app users on Android apps out of which Indians spent around 150 billion hours. This translates to near about 2 hours spent by Android users on a daily basis.
Emerging markets such as India, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico occupied four of the five top spots for total time spent on usage of Android apps. But, in terms of worldwide revenue, India is not even a part of the top 10 countries indicating that Google needs further efforts for its adoption in the country.
