Cairn India Receives Approval for Drilling Sixty Four Wells in KG-Basin
Cairn India has received the nod from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change committee to undertake the task of drilling sixty four wells in KG-Basin situated at Guntur and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Certain conditions were put forth by EAC (Expert Appraisal Committee) with other general and specific environmental conditions for the proposed drilling.
Cairn India has proposed that it will undertake drilling of eleven appraisal wells and fifty five exploratory wells in offshore KG-Basin. Situated along Andhra Pradesh coast in the Bay of Bengal, the total area covered by the offshore block is around 1988 km.
A force majeure was declared by Cairn India for 2 of its oil & gas blocks which also included KG-OSN-2009/3 because of the objection put forth by Ministry of Defense for undertaking exploratory works. But in 2014, the Ministries offered their clearance to Cairn India.
On 30th June, 2010, Cairn India was awarded the block as part of NELP-VIII round for hydrocarbons exploration and production. The annual report of last year stated that Cairn India has one hundred percent stake in the block.
