Bajrang Dal men sprinkle gau mutra on garba revellers in Gandhinagar
Bajrang Dal activists have begun a drive to “purify” non-Hindus at garba venues in Gandhinagar by sprinkling cow urine on them. They think it is the “perfect way” to keep non-Hindus away from the revelry. However, the average Gujarati clearly does not welcome the move as was evident from the reactions of revellers at this particular venue at Gandhinagar’s Sector 11. On Tuesday, 25 Bajrang Dal members, with support from Vishwa Hindu Parishad, executed their novel idea of purifying all revellers entering a private venue at Sector 11 in the capital by sprinkling gau mutra on them.
They mixed urine with ganga jal to prevent clothes of revellers from getting stained before sprinkling it on them with betel leaves. The stench was unignorable, but some walked in without protest while others like Devdattsinh Raol refused to give in and called the cops. Raol, 35, an IT professional, called the cops after the Bajrang Dal members before they could sprinkle gau mutra on him. He did not even let them apply a tilak on his forehead.
‘I DON’T NEED TO PROVE I AM A HINDU’
“They threatened to throw me out of the venue if I did not allow them to go ahead with what they planned to do. Who are they to not allow me entry when I have bought my passes?” “This is ridiculous. Most people do not like this but they allow it out of fear. Sprinkling the gau mutra on a person violates all limits of his tolerance. I don’t think I need to prove to anyone that I am a Hindu,” he added. His wife Jainikaba, equally furious, said, “If these activists want to show their courage, they should go and stand on the Indo-Pak border.” S B Nadia, a homeguard jawan, who rushed to Raol’s rescue, told Mirror, “He did tell me that they were trying to forcibly apply something on him. The problem was later solved.” Minister of State for Social Justice Keshaji Chauhan, a guest at the event, was also welcomed by the activists with gaumutra.
‘WANT TO DISCOURAGE FLIRTING’
Amit Upadhyay, president of Bajrang Dal (Gandhinagar district), said: “We have been carrying out this purification drive for the past four years. We began this to avoid love-jihad and to discourage revellers who visit venues to flirt and not out of respect for the goddess. Earlier, we used to apply only the tilak but we felt that gau mutra was the perfect way to keep non-Hindus away. So, we started sprinkling it on revellers as we believe that non- Hindus will not allow us to do that.” Upadhyay, a resident of Dehgam, has been associated with Bajrang Dal for the past 15 years. An accountant with a private firm, he has around 300 youths, mostly above 25 years of age, working under his supervision. His team propagates Hindutva not only during Navratri but also on Holi and Valentine’s Day.
‘WE ARE SERVING OUR RELIGION’
Asked about police permission for such a drive, Upadhyay said: “We don’t need police permission. We are serving our religion and even organisers do not have a problem.” While Raol managed to enter the venue without letting Bajrang Dal have his way, Upadhyay said they allowed him in “only because he was with his wife”. Shaktisinh Zala, president, Bajrang Dal (Gandhinagar city), said: “We are doing this to make Hindus aware of the fact that this is their festival.”
‘WE WILL THROW THEM OUT’
Asked about vehement protests from people who do not wish gau mutra to be sprinkled on them, Zala said, “We don’t allow such people to enter the venue. We throw them out if need be. We are doing work that is legal are not even afraid of a police complaint. We make five to eight teams and visit different venues of the city.” A resident of Pethapur, Zala has been associated with the Bajrang Dal for the past three years and drives a jeep on the Gandhinagar-Vijapur route. Nikunj Patel, a resident of Sector 13, said, “This is not fair at all. I could not do anything about the gau mutra but I wiped off the tilak from my forehead once I entered the venue.”
