One jawan killed in attack on Army camp near J&K’s Baramulla
Militants mounted a suicide attack on an Army camp outside Baramulla town late on Sunday night, less than a week after the Indian Special Forces smashed seven terror launch pads during a surgical strike across the Line of Control (LoC).
When last reports came in, a BSF jawan and two militants were killed. Four soldiers, including one BSF jawan, were injured.
At around 10.30 pm, locals heard heavy firing in Baramulla town, just 55 km north of Srinagar. A Srinagar-based Army spokesman later confirmed to The Hindu that militants had opened fire at the Army camp outside Baramulla.
Preliminary reports suggested that the militants opened fire at a battalion headquarters of the Army. “An exchange of fire is on,” the Army spokesman said.
It is suspected that militants managed to reach close to the Army’s 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp in Janbazpora area.
BSF picket targeted
A BSF picket near the camp also came under heavy fire, leaving two jawans injured.
As fighting continued, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Prayers for all in the area.”
Locals said loud explosions were heard.
The attack comes just days after militants attacked the Army installation in Baramulla district’s Uri area, killing 19 soldiers and injuring 30 others.
A PTI report quoting official sources said firing was reported at the Rashtriya Rifles camp and militants were believed to have entered it through the adjacent BSF camp.
The situation is under control, the Northern Command of the Army tweeted later at night.
