Rain causes extensive damage in AP
Torrential rain triggered by a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal wreaked havoc in Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) since Thursday morning.
Guntur district bore the brunt of nature’s fury. At least five persons met with a watery grave at different places in the district. Three of them were swept away by Kuppaganjivagu in Nadendla mandal.
Roads suffered extensive damage due to flooding and several trains between Guntur and Hyderabad were held up for hours together as the tracks went several feet under water. Crops in thousands of acres were marooned by swollen rivers and streams throughout the State.
Scores of villages were completely cut off due to the breaching of tanks. A large number of policemen and personnel of the National Disaster Response Force were deployed in rescue operations. Thousands of people were evacuated to safety following an alert sounded by the government.
Guntur district was battered by incessant rain with Chilakaluripet, Gurazala, Narsaraopet, Piduguralla, Sattenapalli and Tenali towns and their surrounding areas incurring the maximum loss.
Miraculous escape
A truck was caught in the swirling waters of Naguleru River near Dachepalli and its driver and cleaner were rescued.
Kurnool city, Mahanandi and other towns in Kurnool district received torrential rain during the last 24 hours. The Paleruvagu near Koilakuntla village overflowed due to the rain. Traffic on the Nandyal-Ongole highway was obstructed by flooding. Gundlakammavagu in Prakasam district was in spate with a heavy inflow of 3000 cusecs at Gundla Brahmeswaram, inundating tens of villages in Racherla and Komarolu mandals.
Vehicular traffic to Hyderabad was disrupted following heavy rains in Addanki and Santamagaluru mandals. Traffic between Parchur and Guntur was also badly hit. A low-level causeway across Goderu stream was washed away near Rajuvaripeta in Chapadu mandal in Kadapa district in the wee hours of Thursday. A bridge across Budamavanka stream was washed away between Rajupalem and Ayyavaripalem. Chagalnadu canal in East Godavari district, on which a lift irrigation scheme was built, had a breach near Velugubanda village disrupting traffic on NH-16 in the afternoon for a few hours between Rajamahendravaram and Visakhapatnam.
