Karnataka Assemly resolution on Cauvery row could lead to constitutional crisis
With Governor Vajubhai Rudrabhai Vala giving the go-ahead, Karnataka is set to hold a day-long special session of the legislature on Friday to pass a resolution against releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Supreme Court on September 20.
Meanwhile, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti is believed to have told Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Delhi that the Centre “couldn’t do anything” as the Cauvery dispute was sub judice. All political parties have given their backing for the move by the Chief Minister to “defy” the apex court’s directive, and the resolution that will be moved by the government is expected to get unanimous support. Legal experts say the resolution would lead to a confrontation between the judiciary and the legislature.
