2012 Delhi gang rape case convict attempts suicide
Vinay Sharma, one of the six men convicted in the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, allegedly attempted suicide at Tihar Jail late on Wednesday night.
Police said Sharma appears to have consumed some pills before using a towel to hang himself. However, one other inmate woke up in the nick of time to bring Sharma down and alert the jail authorities.
He was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital around midnight. He is kept under observation and police said he is likely to survive.
What prompted him to take the extreme step remains unknown yet. A West Delhi district police team and Tihar Jail authorities are simultaneously probing the circumstances of the suicide attempt.
In March 2013, Ram Singh, another accused in the Nirbhaya gang rape case, committed suicide by hanging in his Tihar Jail cell. While some suspected it to be a murder case, subsequent probe into the incident concluded that it was a suicide.
Sharma and five others have been found guilty in the sensational gang rape case and have been awarded death sentence.
