CM asks BWSSB for report before availing of JICA aid
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday directed Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials to come out with a comprehensive project report within a week and take a call on availing of Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) aid for a project involving the supply of water to 110 villages that were added to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.
Armed with a Rs. 5,018 crore proposal to supply Cauvery water to these areas and lay underground drainage lines, BWSSB) has already obtained the Centre’s approval for availing of JICA aid.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister had a meeting with officials from the BWSSB and Department of Finance at his home office to discuss the project.
BWSSB chairperson Tushar Girinath said JICA had given the Board a few options. “The Chief Minister has asked us to discuss the options with the Finance and Urban Development Departments and come out with a decision within a week,” he said.
Laying of pipelines
The 110 villages are spread across 225 sq km. The project involves the laying of 10,000 km of drinking water and underground drainage lines, and the construction of 10 ground-level reservoirs. The total requirement for 110 villages is estimated to be 263 million litres of water per day (MLD).
