Xiaomi to dial into Tier-III towns for growth
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will expand its presence into Tier III cities and unveil new products to boost its presence in India, according to a top official.
“From around 5,000 stores now, we want to have 10,000 stores by early 2017. Our existing stores are in Tier I and Tier II cities, we would now enter Tier III cities, too, while increasing presence in the two former categories,” said Manu Jain, India Head, Xiaomi Technology India Pvt. Ltd.
“We are looking to expand to a few more categories like smart air-purifiers,” he said.
He was in the city on Monday to unveil the Made-in-India ‘Redmi 3S’ and ‘Redmi Prime.’ Over 75 per cent of Xiaomi’s smartphones sold in India are also made in the country. The company considered the sub-Rs.10,000 category phone as a disruptive product in India.
Nascent stage
“India is at a very nascent stage for us but we are stepping up our presence through various means ..we have increased headcount. From around 35 people, we now have 100-member team here,” Mr. Jain said.
Xiaomi, which entered the Indian market in mid-2014, is also keen on increasing its production capacity.
Xiaomi was founded in 2010 by Lei Jun.
