AIADMK sacks Sasikala Pushpa after she alleges ‘threat to life’ in Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Monday witnessed dramatic scenes as AIADMK member Sasikala Pushpa alleged that there was a threat to her life. She also alleged that she was under pressure to quit from the Upper House. Minutes after her assertion, the AIADMK announced that she was expelled from the party for ‘bringing a bad name’ to the party by slapping DMK MP Tiruchi Siva.Sasikala Pushpa was permitted to speak in the Rajya Sabha by Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien after she raised the issue in the well of the House. “There is a threat to my life. I am being pressured to resign from my Constitutional position. Sir, please help me,” she said and broke down.
Kurien then asked her to write to the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President, Hamid Ansari, about the alleged threat to her life and assured her the House’s support. Minutes later, AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced that Sasikala Pushpa had been stripped of her primary membership of the AIADMK for ‘bringing a bad name’ to the party.
The dramatic developments come just days after Sasikala Pushpa slapped senior DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva at an airport. She had alleged that Siva was making uncharitable remarks about the AIADMK and its cadre and that she could not tolerate this.
Pushpa had later apologized to Siva for the incident.
Pushpa had been elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2014. At the time, she had been Mayor of Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi. In January, Jayalalithaa had removed Pushpa as the AIADMK’s women’s wing secretary, a key post.
