Jr. home minister’s hotline to Home Minister
Home Minister G. Parameshwara was in for a surprise on Wednesday morning when he got a message on his phone from his “counterpart” in a government higher primary school in a tiny village in Dakshina Kannada.
Divith U. Rai, a class 8 student at Harady in Puttur taluk and designated “home minister” of his “school cabinet”, was so miffed with the transfer of four teachers from his school that he decided to take up the issue with the Minister and shot off a message. The fact that his uncle knew the Minister gave him access to the number.
The students and parents alike have been a worried lot ever since four of the 15 teachers were “arbitrarily” transferred out of this school with 432 students. Puttur Block Education Officer G. Shashidhar had ordered transfer of four teachers, saying the school has “excess” teachers.
Minister calls back
In his SMS to Mr. Parameshwara, Divith sought time to make a call. The Home Minister, amid all the problems plaguing his Ministry, found time to call back. During “high-level talks”, the young boy spoke about the teachers’ transfers and its impact on education.
Convinced of the plea, it is learnt that Mr. Parameshwara subsequently called Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanvir Sait, who has promised to look into the issue.
Divith is elated that his SMS has managed to make an impact.
He told that as a mark of protest, students boycotted classes on Wednesday.
Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty too had visited the school. Divith said that his was a “model school” and has been getting a good number of students, thanks to the quality of teaching. It was adjudged the best school in the district in 2014–15.
