Juvenile Bihar school board ‘topper’ languishes in jail
HASI MALAHI (VAISHALI): For the past four days, “intermediate arts topper” Ruby Rai is in Beur Central Jail as no family member has so far turned up to submit before a Patna court that she is a juvenile. Ruby was arrested on last Saturday and sent to a remand home after she flunked her re-test conducted by the Bihar State Education Board.
She was on Sunday produced before a court that said until she proves her juvenile status, she would remain in judicial custody. On Thursday, the court trying her case asked the police to verify the authenticity of her Class X Bihar School Examination Board certificate which shows her date of birth as November 15, 1998. That would make her well over five months short of 18. In her village, Hasi Malahi, about 60km from Patna, one faces no difficulty in finding the way to her home. Tea vendors, children and people on the streets are ready with directions to guide any visitor to her house. Some children are even willing to walk you to her place. But Ruby’s house is locked. Her parents are on the run to evade arrest.
Ruby had secured 444 marks out of 500 in the Inter Arts result announced on May 28. The topper scam broke out when she described political science “prodigal science” adding it was related to the study of cookery in a TV interview.
