I want all Ishrat files on record: Chidambaram
Replying to queries on the controversial Ishrat Jahan encounter by Gujarat police and his alleged role in drafting a second affidavit, former Home Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said on Tuesday that there was nothing morally, politically and legally wrong in that affidavit which said that there was no conclusive evidence to prove she was a terrorist.
Mr. Chidambaram was addressing a Press conference in Mumbai after filing his nomination papers for a Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra.
The Congress leader mentioned a report from Ahmedabad Metropolitan Judge S P Tamang which had called the encounter fake and after which the said affidavit was filed. “The version says it is fake encounter. The persons, who were killed, were in custody for more than two or three days. They were killed at midnight… while sitting in the car … Rs 2.06 lakh was planted on their bodies… The further affidavit has only five or six paragraphs. It does not withdraw the first affidavit,” he said.
He pointed out that in paragraph two, it says why a further affidavit is being filed and in paragraph five it says that the Government of India shares intelligence inputs regularly with States. “Accordingly, we share intelligence inputs. I wish to clarify that the intelligence inputs are only intelligence inputs and not conclusive evidence and you cannot come to any conclusion on the basis of intelligence inputs. It must be investigated and prosecuted in a court of law,” he added.
The former Home Minister’s remarks came amid speculation that the one-member inquiry panel set up by the Union Home Ministry, probing the missing files related to the case of alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan, could submit its report soon. “I want all files to be put on record. It is incomprehensible why some files are missing. Once everything is on record, I stand vindicated,” he said.
Rajya Sabha elections
Earlier, Mr. Chidambaram filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra. The election is slated to be held on June 11. He being the only candidate from the party, his victory is almost confirmed.
At the end of deadline for filing nominations today, six candidates remain in the fray for six vacancies from the State. Other candidates are Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal, Praful Patel (NCP), Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Vikas Mahatme (BJP) and Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena).
