Bandh today
Life in Dakshina Kannada is likely to be affected on Thursday as different organisations have expressed support to the “voluntary bandh” called by Netravathi Rakshana Samyukta Samithi, an action committee to save the Netravathi, to press the government to drop Yettinahole or Netravathi diversion project.
Earlier, on March 3, 2014, the district had shut down voluntarily when the foundation stone for the project was laid at Chikkaballapur.
It is feared that the Yettinahole project, aimed at drawing about 24 tmc ft of water from the tributaries of the Nethravati for the benefit of the parched districts, will affect the river, which is considered the lifeline of the district with Mangaluru depending solely on it for drinking water. The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal in Chennai is hearing a batch of petitions against the project.
The district units of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) have supported the bandh. While the Congress has not openly supported it, many of its leaders are active members of the samithi. Posters supporting the bandh appeared on city buses here on Wednesday.
