SIT to investigate murder of Army Major’s father, brother
Swinging into action almost a week after the father and brother of an Army Major were shot dead in Karwari village here, the Sonipat Police have set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the matter and announced a reward of Rs.5 lakh on the accused’s head.
“We have set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case and also constituted 10 more teams to conduct raids and arrest the accused. The teams have been conducting raids in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana. We expect a breakthrough soon,” said Sonipat Superintendent of Police Hardeep Singh Doon. He added that 40 policemen have been deployed in the village to prevent any untoward incident following the double murder.
Panchayat election
Major Sushil Chhikara’s father Jagbir Singh, 57, and brother Anil Chhikara, 25, of Karewari village were killed by Ajay alias Kannu on May 12 as they hadn’t voted for the goon’s brother in the Panchayat election.
The Army officer told the reporters that he had called the Sonipat SP from Agra (his present posting) informing him about the threat to his family from the gangster and lamented that prompt action on part of the police would have saved his father and brother. Mr. Doon, however, claimed that he had rushed a team led by the DSP to the village as soon as he got a call from the major, but his father and son were not at home. “The two were not present in the village and had gone out. The murder took place in Barwasni village,” said Mr. Doon.
The accused, Kannu, has been previously involved in 13 cases of murder and attempt to murder registered from 2009-11. “After 2011, Kannu seemed to have mended his ways. But, he murdered the father-son duo to take revenge on them after his brother lost the Panchayat election,” said Mr. Doon.
