Low pressure in Bay of Bengal dumps heavy rain in Nagapattinam district
The Nagapattinam district administration has issued a warning following the weatherman’s forecast of the depression in the Bay of Bengal intensifying into a deep depression. Under its influence, the Carvery delta districts, especially the coastal regions of the area are experiencing heavy and widespread rain over the past two days. Though in the interior areas rains abated in the afternoon on Tuesday, the sun never really came out while dark clouds hung low over head in the skies.
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nannilam in Tiruvarur district recorded 141.2 mm rainfall to top the chart followed by Tiruvarur 123.6 mm, Sirkali in Nagapattinam district registered 115 mm while the Lower Anicut in Thanjavur district registered 100.4 mm during the corresponding period.
Issuing the cyclone warning, Nagapattinam District Collector S. Palanisamy said since it was fishing ban period, most fishermen would be remaining off the seas while cautioning some who used to venture in the fibre boats not to go out for fishing as the seas would be rough and choppy.
Precautionary measures have been launched, cyclone shelters readied and steps put in place to clear potentially water logging areas in the district. Temporary shelters have been identified to relocate people in times of need, he added. Cyclone Warning No. 3 has been hoisted at the Nagapattinam Harbour to alert the region about the impending danger.
The chief amount of rainfall (in mm) in other centres across the delta districts include Kodavasal 98.8, Nidamangalam 79.4, Mannargudi 78.6, Valangaiman 76.5, Tiruthuraipoondi 76.2, Pandavayar Head 74 and Muthupet 68.2 mm (all in Tiruvarur district);
Mayiladuthurai 99.8, Talaignayar 97, Kollidam 88, Vedaranyam 81.6, Manalmedu 78, Tirupoondi 69.2, Nagapattinam 61.9 and Tranquebar 56 mm (all in Nagapattinam district); Madukkur 87.2, Manjalaru 70.20, Pattukkottai 70, Tiruvidaimarudur 66.8, Peravurani 66, Kumbakonam 63, Papanasam 61, Ayyampettai 55, Grand Anicut 53.8, Tirukkattupalli and Neivasal Thenpathy 49.2 each, Vettikadu 47.2, Eachanviduthi 46, Adirampattinam 42.8, Orathanad 33.28, Thanjavur 30 and Budalur 23.6 mm (all in Thanjavur district).
TIRUCHI: The low pressure brought widespread rainfall to the district on Monday. Some of the dry belts of the district such as Thathaiyengarpet and Pulivalam received moderate showers, which came as a huge relief during the peak summer. Samayapuram in the district recorded the maximum rainfall of 94 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The chief amount of rainfall recorded in other parts of the district during the same period were (in mm): Navalur Kottapattu 69; Pullampadi 65.80; Vathalai Anicut 55; Thuvakudi 53; Kallakudi 50.20; Thathaiyengarpet 48.30; Golden Rock 48.20; Nandhiyar Head 46.40; Lalgudi 46.10; Tiruchi Airport 45.20; Musiri 45; Pulivalam 44; Ponnaniyar Dam 43.60; Tiruchi Junction 42; Devimangalam 40; Tiruchi Town 37, Thuraiyur 34, Kovilpatti 30.20; Marungapuri 20.40; Kuppampatti 15; Chirukudi and Thenparanadu 13 each and Manapparai 10.20. The district received an average of 40.34 mm of rainfall during the period. Though the sky remained overcast on Tuesday, there was no rainfall in Tiruchi but for some scattered showers in a few parts of the district.
